“YELLOW SANDS; OR, EIGHT TALES OF PIXIE MISCHIEF”

Cries for Colour’s sophomore album, Yellow Sands is slicker and more interesting than previous releases in nearly every way. Recorded over three years, the songwriting reflects a difficult last few years; an ongoing health crisis, becoming a caregiver, and experiences with mental illness shape the album’s concept about disease, madness, and fairies.

Built around the contributions of musicians from around the world, including Australian-born bassist Colin Edwin (formerly of Porcupine Tree) and Portuguese multi-instrumentalist Nuno Silva, Yellow Sands is genre-bending—the album’s eight pieces veer from hazy and ethereal psychedelic pop to fragile indie folk and cosmic post-rock. File under self-indulgent and apologetically odd.

“MOON MUSICK”

The companion EP to “Sun Speak,” “Moon Musick” is a more direct project than its sibling, but no less ambitious. The project features three new hazy and dreamlike compositions: “Lovelace,” “Bridges,” and “Eclipse,” which respectively transition seamlessly from jazzy experimental rock to fuzzy indie pop and introspective late-night electronica. Drums play a more prominent role on “Moon Musick” than previous Cries for Colour releases and ground the EP’s more ethereal soundscapes in an accessible manner.

While “Bridges” and “Eclipse” will stay exclusive to the EP, a revised version of “Lovelace” will appear on the second studio album.

A music video for “Lovelace,” edited from astrophysical visualizations created in the 1920s, also accompanied the release of “Moon Musick.”

Released on April 28, 2023.

01. Lovelace - 6:15
02. Bridges - 3:21
03. Eclipse - 4:24

“SUN SPEAK”

The follow-up to “Fairlight,” the “Sun Speak” EP embraces more unconventional song structures and noisier textures than its predecessor. This new direction is most evident on the opening 12-minute track “Sleeper,” which traverses multiple passages with a varied and exciting sonic palette. Elsewhere on the EP, “Birdsong” floats above the clouds with its hushed dream pop vocals while the electronic “Communion” conjures to mind an industrial future with its experimental sound design.

While “Birdsong” and “Communion” will stay exclusive to the EP, an expanded version of “Sleeper” will appear on the second studio album.

A music video for “Sleeper,” edited from stop motion footage from the 1950s tracing the development of light and electricity throughout history, also accompanied the release of “Sun Speak.”

Released on November 18, 2022.

01. Sleeper - 11:48
02. Birdsong - 4:36
03. Communion - 3:57

“FAIRLIGHT”

Album artwork by Sophie Rowan, design by Quinn Downton

Cries for Colour’s debut album, “Fairlight,” is an atmospheric and dreamy love letter to the late 1970s-early 1980s pop era, which was inhabited by inventive artists like Peter Gabriel, David Bowie, Talking Heads and Kate Bush, who all created albums with a slew of world-class session musicians. While pop songwriting and unique production take center stage on “Fairlight,” a few of the album’s songs, like the title track centerpiece, are abstract in their arrangements and structure, integrate electronics and subvert the rules and expectations of a “pop” album.

The material is brought to life by the lush performances of incredibly talented session vocalists and musicians, like ex-Porcupine Tree bassist Colin Edwin.

“Fairlight” spawned three singles: “Eden,” “Sea Fret” and “Castilleja.”

Released on January 28, 2022.
